THE FORGOTTEN FIELDS (NOVEL) – Chapter 209

Varkas gritted his teeth as he looked at her, and then shouted loudly toward the door:

“Bring food immediately!”

The maids who were snooping in the hallway were startled and rushed down the stairs.

It was not long before they entered the room cautiously, holding trays overflowing with a wide variety of dishes.

Varkas forced the weakened woman to sit up, supporting her back with pillows to prop up her upper body.

Then he took a bowl containing a white porridge from the tray and placed it in her hand.

“Put aside these childish behaviors and eat right now.”

Her eyes, devoid of focus, turned toward the bowl.

Seeing that she showed no reaction, Varkas added in a threatening tone driven by his concern:

“If you do not eat on your own, I will force you to.”

But Talia remained leaning back without making any movement, like a doll whose strings had been cut.

In the end, Varkas’s patience ran out; he took the spoon and scooped up some of the porridge.

And as he brought it close to her mouth, she turned her head to the side in annoyance.

He gripped her face roughly as if trapping it and forced her jaw to open.

And as soon as he attempted to insert the spoon, he finally received a powerful reaction.

“I don’t want to!” the woman screamed sharply and pushed his arm with force.

That violent and unexpected rebellion caused the spoon to fly out of his hand.

The spoon rolled across the floor with a metallic clink, while the bowl of porridge overturned onto the bed blankets due to the struggle.

Varkas contemplated that with imperturbable eyes, and immediately took another container.

Inside the small ceramic bowl was a drink made from fermented goat’s milk, which was what she preferred as a dessert. He brought it close to her mouth and said in a rebuking tone:

“Drink.”

She pressed her lips together firmly and averted her body to the side.

He held her by force as she attempted to escape and pinned her against the backrest of the bed, while trapping her jaw with his other hand to force her to open her mouth.

Next, he began to pour the drink little by little into the small opening that formed.

However, Talia refused to swallow.

The liquid, unable to cross her closed throat, overflowed, moistening her mouth and chin until it trickled downward.

At that instant, a searing fury erupted in his chest.

Varkas poured everything that remained in the bowl into his own mouth.

Then he pushed her body, which was twisting trying to break free, forcefully down onto the pillows, and sealed his lips against hers.

Only then, a spark of anger flashed inside the woman’s empty pupils.

He was ignorant of where such strength came from in the body of a woman who had suffered from hunger for days, for her slender hands began to scratch his chest and neck erratically.

He paid no attention to that and pressed deeply into her mouth.

The woman, whose throat was opened by force, emitted a low groan while the veins in her neck stood out.

He ignored her suffering and began to pour what he had in his mouth gradually while subtly pressing the base of her tongue; however, the woman, with her muscles tense, bit his tongue with force.

Thanks to him maintaining his grip on her jaw, the injury did not turn out serious, but he perceived an intense taste of blood in his mouth.

Finally, Varkas lifted his head.

And Talia did not waste the opportunity, turning toward the opposite side.

He gripped the shoulders of the woman who was trying to leap out of the bed and pressed her down onto the blankets once more.

She was breathing with difficulty and contemplated him from between the strands of her hair, which was completely disheveled.

Her face became flooded with cold sweat in an instant.

Her lips and chin were stained with the white liquid he had introduced into her by force and with the traces of blood, while the viscous drink adhered to her chest, which rose and fell panting. She resembled a mythological creature that captivated humans to devour them alive.

Varkas looked at her with disturbed eyes and emitted a choked voice:

“Speak. What must I do for you to eat?”

Suddenly, from between her cracked lips, a dry voice emerged that recalled the whistling of the wind. It took him some time to notice that this sound was a laugh.

The woman seemed to have consumed the entirety of her energies in the last altercation, so she relaxed her limbs and exhaled weak breaths of air mixed with a rattle:

“You speak as if you were truly going to fulfill my words…….”

“……”

“I will never let myself be deceived again.”

The brightness extinguished again in her pupils, which moments before shone with sharpness.

The woman fixed her gaze into the void as if contemplating an abyss, and murmured while lowering her wet eyelashes:

“Just leave me alone.”

That aspect which denoted an absolute capitulation caused a slight spasm in his heart.

Varkas inserted his arm behind her neck immediately to sit her upper body up once more.

He was determined to make her eat regardless of what she said.

He gripped the cheek of the woman, who was sinking into her own world, and forced her to look at him.

However, the woman remained with her eyes closed and motionless.

And after a few scarce seconds, he realized that she had lost consciousness completely due to the extreme weakness. He shouted with a thundering voice:

“Bring the doctor immediately!”

As soon as the order was issued, hurried footsteps resonated.

Varkas carried her with a single arm and pulled away the blankets and sheets that were in absolute disarray.

Seeing that, the maid demonstrated her astuteness by extracting a new linen and spreading it over the bed.

Varkas laid her back down on it, took a wet towel from the container placed on the shelf, and wiped her face.

And during all that time, Talia remained inert like a corpse without regaining consciousness.

She did not open her eyes again until the priest, led by the maids, applied medicinal magic upon her.

“Employing medicinal magic to restore strength is nothing more than a provisional measure. If she does not ingest a sufficient amount of water and food, her body will continue to weaken more and more,” the priest said with a severe tone while directing his words toward her.

Talia fixed her gaze toward the window and did not utter a word.

The priest coughed subtly as if he felt uncomfortable, and looked at him sideways.

Varkas nodded his head, indicating for him to withdraw.

The cleric did not hesitate to gather his belongings and leave the room.

And once the maids withdrew as well, Varkas took a bowl containing fruits in syrup from the tray once more.

“Eat.”

Upon bringing the bowl close to her face, she looked at him with an expression filled with contempt.

Not a single muscle of Varkas’s face moved while he took a piece of pear soaked in honey and placed it next to her mouth.

“If you wish to repeat the altercation from a moment ago, resist as much as you want. Whether you twist or faint, I intend to reiterate this over and over until you ingest the food properly.”

The woman contemplated him closely for a long time and finally opened her mouth.

An immense feeling of relief invaded him to such an extent that his fist was on the verge of loosening.

He pressed his fingers, which suffered a tremor, and introduced the piece of fruit quickly between her lips.

The woman chewed the portion in her mouth a couple of times, and then, suddenly, spat the contents erratically onto the sheet.

Varkas’s face tensed coldly again.

The woman threw a scathing smile at him:

“Because you display so much effort, my desire not to eat has increased.”

He clenched his fist tightly.

He felt his nails digging into the skin of the palm of his hand.

The woman added with a hoarse voice, as if provoking him, who was trying to contain himself with extreme difficulty:

“Try to introduce it by force. I will spit it all out, I assure you.” Then she unleashed a laugh that gave the impression of having lost her sanity.

That deserted and dry tone crushed his mind in an instant.

Varkas took a new piece of fruit from the bowl violently, just as she incited him to. And no sooner had he introduced it by force into her mouth than the woman bit his finger severely.

He saw the blood gush from the skin where her small teeth had dug in, but he ignored it.

A determination close to madness possessed him in a second.

“Swallow it immediately.”

She continued biting his finger while pinning him with a sharp gaze.

Varkas exhaled accelerated breaths of air in front of her fierce face, and said, gritting his teeth:

“Do you perhaps intend to starve to death for the sake of a simple wolf pup?!”

As if his words had been the detonator of an explosion, she fell into a crisis of agitation.

Varkas increased his hold on her as she twisted like an animal trapped in a net, but upon glimpsing the marks of the bruises upon her skin, he murmured a curse in a low voice and relaxed his hands.

And immediately at that instant, his cheek burned before a slap.

He pinned her with a gaze as cold as ice.

The woman who had struck his face was holding her chest while panting with violence.

“You…… what do you know? Kan was everything to me. With the presence of Kan, I was finally able to…… finally not feel pain…… and I conceived a desire to live…….”

Burning tears flooded her face in abundance.

The woman curled up while trembling violently, and then lunged toward him:

“You snatched that away from me! I begged you that way……! I begged you to leave him alive……!”

An exclamation close to a wail erupted from her, as if tearing her throat.
