Chapter 189
THE FORGOTTEN FIELDS (NOVEL) – CHAPTER 189
Varkas had been forced to sleep alone in his bed for all the past days because of that wolf, which made the fur on his body stand on end just by looking at it.
Therefore, as much as he rejoiced at her decision, uneasiness invaded him at the same time.
“Will I be able to restrain myself until the end?”
Varkas gazed at the face of the woman, who was breathing regularly in his arms, then sighed deeply and walked toward the door.
“My lord… use this coat of mine.”
The healer ran after him and extended a cloak hanging from the wall. He took it, tightly wrapped Talia’s body, and left the cabin immediately.
The gray darkness had already taken over the back garden of the castle.
He followed the forest path, surrounded by hazel trees, advancing slowly amidst the absolute gloom.
He felt the raindrops, which were beginning to subside, soaking his back and shoulders, but he did not feel cold at all; his entire attention was concentrated on her warm breath brushing against his neck. To ensure the rain did not touch her, he pulled back the edge of the hood covering her face a little.
He saw her thick golden eyelashes, which cast long shadows over her cheeks tinged with a pale rose.
As he wiped away a drop of water that had settled on them with his thumb, her slender eyelids trembled and her bright blue eyes opened.
“Varkas…?”
“Yes, it is me.”
His low, husky voice blended with the humid air. He cleared his throat and added:
“Keep sleeping, I will take you to your quarters.”
She looked at him with lost eyes, as if the effect of the medicine had not yet faded, and then leaned her face against his chest.
Varkas tightened the grip of his arms around her back.
He was assaulted by a sensation similar to vertigo due to the heat seeping through his wet clothes and the sweet scent of her body, which mingled with the smell of grass.
He adjusted the coat well for her and crossed the black, rainy forest at a quick pace.
When he finally reached the main castle, his body was completely soaked, as if he had been swimming, but his inside burned like fire.
Varkas passed right by the servants, who ran toward him with astonished eyes, and went up the stairs.
“I do not need anyone’s help.”
He said with a warning tone to the servants following him, and then opened the bedroom door.
The room was illuminated by candlelight. He entered and carefully removed the coat wrapping her; fortunately, her clothes had not gotten very wet.
He carelessly threw the damp garment onto the floor and then gently placed her onto the tidy sheets of the bed.
At that instant, her slender arms encircled his neck.
A heavy breath escaped Varkas’s lips as he tried to pull himself up, while her broken voice caressed his ears seductively:
“Do not go away… I am cold.”
“… My clothes are wet.”
“Then take them off quickly.”
She looked at him with half-closed eyes and lifted her soft, rose-tinged fingers to push the damp hair away from his forehead.
At that moment, his heart beat forcefully against his ribs.
His gaze locked onto her half-open lips as if it were an invitation, then he tilted his head a bit to the side trying to release her arms, but her warm lips covered his.
He crumbled at the touch of her lips.
Varkas immediately held her head from behind and drew her in for a deeper kiss.
The damp silk clung to her soft skin, highlighting the elegant curves of her body without modesty.
As he ran his fingers along those delicate lines, Talia parted her lips slightly and murmured with a thick voice:
“My clothes have gotten completely wet too.”
He clenched his teeth and grabbed her wrist.
“Do not touch me lightly.”
At this, he immediately received a look of dissatisfaction:
“Why?”
Varkas frowned, not understanding where that question was coming from.
She continued with a complaining tone, similar to her childhood grievances when she annoyed him with her stubbornness:
“You touch my body as you please, why do you forbid me every time I try to touch you?”
He looked at her with narrowed eyes, her bold face in front of him.
“Does she really ask that without knowing?”
This woman exuded sensuality all around her, as if provoking him, and yet, sometimes she acted as if she knew nothing about men. Varkas sighed deeply and said:
“Because it is difficult for me to restrain myself when you touch me.”
When he confessed it in that dry tone, her sharp eyes widened in astonishment.
Her cheeks were tinged with an intense blush.
“If restraining yourself is difficult… then do not restrain yourself.”
He felt as if his body were going to burst from the desire to respond to her provocation, but he could not risk another reckless gamble with this woman’s life.
He gathered all his strength to have patience and pulled away from her.
“… It is better that we change clothes first.”
“Why?”
She sat up and glared at him with a defiant look.
Faced with this direct demand, the faint smile that appeared on his lips faded.
Varkas met her face with a look charged with tension.
Although they had not had much time due to the problems with the raiders, the pagans, and the meddling of that damned beast, he seized every opportunity to exchange sweet caresses and kisses with her.
He feared that all of it would end like a mirage if he revealed the truth of his refusal to have offspring, so he could not speak easily.
But at the same time, he was no longer capable of continuing to reject her with vain excuses.
He ran his hand violently through his dripping hair, and his voice came out heavy with grief:
“I do not want to impose a burden on your body.”
“What do you mean by that?” she asked in a dry voice.
When Varkas saw that her eyes, previously overflowing with warmth, had transformed into an icy cold, the features of his face hardened with a feeling of disappointment, and he said with some anxiety:
“I mean that I wish to avoid the risk of you becoming pregnant, your ladyship.”
Her face turned pale in an instant.
“Do you also… believe that I cannot conceive?”
Varkas’s gaze suddenly froze.
“Who told you such a thing?”
“What does it matter who said it! In the end, you think exactly the same way!” she said with a trembling voice while looking at him with eyes full of reproach, “You also believe that I cannot leave a proper heir, do you not? And that is why you reject me. Then say it openly, why do you give me hope? Do you feel pity for me?”
Varkas looked at her with a rigid face, then leaned over the bed, grabbed her by the shoulders, which were trembling violently, and devoured her lips, which were uttering such a string of nonsense.
She showed signs of surprise for a moment and tried to push him away forcefully.
But he ignored it and held her slender neck.
Soon, her hand, which was beating against his chest with violence, transformed into a hand that clung to his wet clothes like glue.
He drew her waist toward himself so that their bodies joined completely, leaving not the slightest space; then he placed his lips next to her flushed ear and pronounced, emphasizing every word:
“Do you think what is happening now is out of pity?”
She remained silent, looking at him with eyes reddened by indignation.
He kissed her eyes and continued with a reassuring tone:
“In the Shirkán family, there are two other people who can carry the legacy besides me. It is not necessary for you to endanger your health to give birth to an heir.”
“… But I want to have a child again,” she murmured with a voice imbued with longing. “My health has improved a lot thanks to ‘Tiuran’. This time, I am truly sure that I will give birth safely.”
