Episode 342. “They call me Yeon Dubi”

Yeon Jeokha carefully opened the restaurant door, peeking inside.

A young waiter rushed towards him, taking the plate and saying reproachfully:

“You said you were hungry, but you left so much food?”

“There was a fight outside. There was so much dust in the air that I couldn’t eat.”

“Ah!”

The waiter looked at him with pity before turning around.

Meanwhile, several warriors who had finished lunch approached the entrance. They were masters of Cheongungwan, also known as the Blue Heaven Hall.

Seeing a familiar face among them, Yeon Jeokha bowed his head in greeting, almost without realizing it.

Then, one of the men said to him:
“Hey, young brother! Could you move aside? You shouldn’t be blocking the entrance.”

“….”

Yeon Jeokha looked at the man with an uncomfortable expression. Seeing someone who couldn’t even hold his gaze before, now so confident, left him with a strange feeling. It was the same person, but he seemed completely different.

“Ah, sure.”

Hurriedly, Yeon Jeokha left the restaurant. The Cheongungwan masters, laughing and chatting among themselves, followed him.

It seemed that the fight was over, as the street was once again filled with people. Everything seemed to return to normal, as if neither he nor the fight between Jangrakbang (Jangrak Sect) and Hyeoljumun (Hyeolju Gate) had ever existed.

“Life, what a thing…”

As he scratched his head, Yeon Jeokha began to walk slowly.

The Cheongungwan warriors, who were behind him, quickly overtook him and disappeared into the crowd.

Over time, memories of people he had forgotten began to emerge. The nangin/wanderer Lee Chun, Wang Jincheong, the daughter of the leader of Cheongungwan, So Gyo, and the Five Heroes of Luoyang: Hwang Dongyeop, Oh Joongsan, and Son Sanggeuk.

They would all surely be busy with their own lives. Of course, if they were still alive.

—————–

Hogwang Province, Mount Wudang, Cheonghuipo Village.

A disheveled-looking young man entered the village, located at the foot of Mount Wudang.

His hair, covered in ash, and his face full of rashes and scabs gave him a pitiful appearance. If it weren’t for the sword hanging from his waist, anyone would have mistaken him for a vagrant.

When Yeon Jeokha arrived at the village, people stepped aside, avoiding him. Accustomed to these reactions, he paid them no attention.

The village, under the influence of Mount Wudang, had a calm and peaceful atmosphere. There were many dojos and martial arts schools, most established by disciples of the Wudang Sect.

After filling his stomach with a simple plate of noodles from a street stall, Yeon Jeokha began to ascend Mount Wudang.

He had visited this place years ago to meet the Sage of Heaven and Earth, so it was familiar to him. Without stopping to look around, he headed directly towards Cheonjubong, the summit.

In each valley where the wind stopped, there were large and small pavilions. These were the residences and training grounds of the masters of the Wudang Sect.

The number of buildings, almost like a village, showed the power of the sect.

After about two hours of walking, the large entrance gate that marked access to the main headquarters of the Wudang Sect appeared before him.

As he approached the gate, two Taoist masters emerged from nowhere to block his path. Hyeoncheong, one of them, asked him:
“Young brother, for what purpose do you climb the mountain?”

With respect, Yeon Jeokha replied:
“I bring a letter from Sword Emperor Namgung Byeok for the leader of the sect.”

Upon hearing the name of the Sword Emperor, Hyeoncheong’s eyes sparkled with curiosity as he examined the young man. His ashy hair, inflamed face, and disheveled figure did not match someone sent by the legendary master.

“What is your name, young brother?”

“Yeon Dubi.”

Without realizing it, Yeon Jeokha used the name he had been using for the past few weeks. He realized his mistake, but it was too late.

Changing his name now would only cause problems, as verifying his identity would raise suspicions.

“As long as the leader of the sect and the Sage of Heaven and Earth know, it’s enough.”

He decided it would be more convenient to keep the name Yeon Dubi while he was in Wudang. The name Yeon Jeokha would only attract attention and complicate his stay.

Hyeoncheong turned to the other master, Dowon:
“Dowon, stay here. I will guide the young man to the leader.”

“Yes, master. But…”

Dowon stared intently at the sword on Yeon Jeokha’s waist. According to the rules of Wudang, weapons were not allowed beyond this point.

Hyeoncheong, without saying anything, waited to see how the young man reacted.

Without hesitation, Yeon Jeokha untied his sword and handed it to Dowon.
“Here you go.”

“Thank you. I will take good care of it.”

Dowon smiled as he placed the sword on a nearby stand. It was a common weapon, nothing special.

With the sword delivered, Hyeoncheong moved forward quickly, followed in silence by Yeon Jeokha.

————

Sangcheong Palace, Headquarters of the Wudang Sect

The leader of the sect, Yeong Gyeolsang, received the young man who called himself Yeon Dubi in his office.

“I heard you bring a letter from the Sword Emperor. Is that true?”

“Yes, here it is.”

Yeon Jeokha took the letter from his clothes and handed it to Yeong Gyeolsang, who immediately opened it, intrigued.

The content was surprising. The Sword Emperor asked that Yeon Jeokha be accepted into the sect to learn special techniques.

“Why does someone else bring this letter, instead of Yeon Jeokha?”

Yeong Gyeolsang examined the young man, but his appearance, with ashy hair and inflamed face, made it difficult to recognize him.

“Could something have happened to Yeon Jeokha?”

Worried, he asked directly:
“Did something happen to Yeon Jeokha?”

The young man replied bluntly:
“I am Yeon Jeokha.”

“What? You are Yeon Jeokha? That’s impossible!”

Surprised, the leader of the sect shook his head in disbelief. The young man briefly explained what happened in Heochang to justify his appearance.

“…At that time I was poisoned with Nakwol Dokjeong, the deadly poison of that Tang Unmang. Although I took an antidote, I didn’t fully recover, and the internal fire rose to my face, causing this appearance.”

“Wow, what an unfortunate situation!”

Upon hearing this, Yeong Gyeolsang carefully observed Yeon Jeokha’s face. Now that he knew the poison had caused that appearance, he began to believe his story.

“A warrior of your level took an antidote, but still didn’t fully recover. It must have been an incredibly powerful poison.”

“According to Tang Unmang, this poison belongs to the Simdok level.”

“Simdok!”

Without realizing it, Yeong Gyeolsang exclaimed aloud.

In the world of Murim, the most feared poison is known as Invisible Poison. However, even this pales in comparison to Simdok, the Heart Poison, a legendary toxin that represents the pinnacle of poisonous arts.

“Tang Unmang… how did he reach that level of mastery in poisons?”

Looking at Yeon Jeokha’s pitiful appearance, he couldn’t help but believe it.

“And what happened to Tang Unmang?”

“I sent him to the Namyeon Inn to make an antidote. Although it doesn’t endanger my life, I couldn’t afford to stay like this.”

“Ah! Did he accept without problems?”

“Since he had nowhere else to go, he even seemed grateful.”

“Isn’t he a disciple of the Tang Family?”

“He told me he didn’t have a good relationship with the head of the Tang Family and that he had run away.”

“I see.”

“Ah, by the way, he mentioned that the Wudang Sect has a very skilled medicine master who could help me.”

“What? In our sect? Do you know what his name is?”

“They call him Yaksa Yeorae Baek Ilun (The Medicine Buddha).”

“Yaksa Yeorae Baek Ilun?”

Yeong Gyeolsang tilted his head, trying to remember, and then shouted towards the door:

“Is anyone out there?”

A deep voice immediately responded:
“Yes, Sect Master. I am Hyeonwol.”

“Go to Yakjedang (Medicine Hall) and bring Master Cheon Il Dojang.”

“Understood.”

When the footsteps faded, Yeong Gyeolsang turned back to Yeon Jeokha:
“The master of Yakjedang probably knows Baek Ilun. But tell me, why do you use the name Yeon Dubi?”

“When I said I was Yeon Jeokha, everyone thought I was lying. They asked me what my real name was, so I answered Yeon Dubi. Since then, I’ve used that name. Even before, at the entrance of the mountain, the name simply came out without me realizing it.”

“Ha, ha! I understand. To be honest, I didn’t believe you were Yeon Jeokha at first. Your face is completely different. What will you do from now on?”

“In what sense?”

“During your stay in the Wudang Sect to learn mystical arts, what name will you use? Unless the poison is completely eliminated, your appearance will require explanations everywhere you go.”

“I think I’ll keep using Yeon Dubi.”

Yeon Jeokha didn’t want to waste time explaining his situation constantly.

Yeong Gyeolsang agreed with his decision.
“Wise choice. For now, let’s keep it a secret that Yeon Jeokha was poisoned. If that news leaks to the Yoomyung Cult, they could send assassins after you.”

The Yoomyung Cult could take advantage of the situation and endanger both Yeon Jeokha and the Wudang Sect.

“From now on, even I will call you Yeon Dubi.”

“Okay.”

Yeon Jeokha nodded without hesitation. In reality, he didn’t want the name Yeon Jeokha to be associated with his current appearance.

“As you may have noticed when you came here, several Taoists of different traditions coexist in the Wudang Sect. In general, they are divided into three main branches: martial arts, mystical arts, and alchemy.”

Yeon Jeokha listened attentively. This information would be essential for his life in Wudang.

When Yeong Gyeolsang finished his explanation, footsteps were heard outside.

Shortly after, Hyeonwol’s deep voice echoed:
“Sect Leader, I have brought Master Cheon Il Dojang from Yakjedang.”

“Good. Let him in.”

An elderly Taoist entered, accompanied by the aroma of medicinal herbs. With a bow, he greeted Yeong Gyeolsang.
“You have called me, Sect Leader.”

“Ha, ha. First let me introduce you. This young man is Yeon Dubi, a guest recommended by Sword Emperor Namgung Byeok to learn our mystical arts. Yeon Dubi, this is Master Cheon Il Dojang, in charge of Yakjedang. He is an expert in alchemy and medicine, more skilled than I in those fields.”

Both bowed to each other.

“I am Cheon Il.”

“Yeon Dubi.”

After the greeting, Cheon Il Dojang cast an inquisitive look at Yeong Gyeolsang, not knowing why he had been summoned.

“Master Cheon Il, do you know anything about a man named Baek Ilun, also known as Yaksa Yeorae?”

After thinking for a moment, Cheon Il Dojang exclaimed:
“Ah, yes! About twenty years ago he entered Mount Wudang. He stayed for a while in Yakjedang, but then he retired to study advanced alchemy.”

“Is he still on Mount Wudang?”

“I’m not sure. Those who are dedicated to alchemy usually live in Namamgung (South Hermitage Palace). If he hasn’t transcended, he’s probably there.”

Namamgung was a set of caves in steep cliffs, famous for its inaccessibility. Unless the alchemists decided to go out, it was almost impossible to know if they were still alive.

Yeon Jeokha intervened:
“So, he hasn’t left the mountain?”

“If there are no records in Yakjedang, he is probably still in some cave in Namamgung… as long as he hasn’t achieved enlightenment and transcended.”
