C318. Something is Strange (5)

Heinkel, the great mage known as the Primordial Cup, and the one who interpreted the Light magic for Alon Palatio, actually—although curious about this demonstration—wasn’t paying that much attention to it.

There were two reasons.

The first: Heinkel could not use the magic that Alon Palatio was capable of using.

She didn’t know why he could use it while others, herself included, could not.

She had only vaguely intuited one thing:

The reason Alon could use that type of magic was due to the eye that was behind him… or due to “her,” who was attached to his existence.

Added to that was the new information she had acquired this time: that the magic Alon was using belonged to the ancient “Mages” of a forgotten era.

And the second reason: the magic he had interpreted for this occasion was Light, a Tier 1 magic.

Something extremely simple.

A magic so basic that no mage following the path of magic had ever failed it, nor should they. There was no reason to pay too much attention to it.

Of course, upon investigating the hidden information, there were interesting parts. But even with that, it was far from being a magic capable of arousing great expectations.

…At least until Alon Palatio performed “that” demonstration of Light.

[…]

Heinkel stared in astonishment at the mages plunged into silence.

Everyone was looking at Alon with eyes wide open.

Under other circumstances, Heinkel would have peeked at those mages and laughed in secret.

There were so many mages who performed a task as easy as snapping their fingers, and then rejoiced as if it were a great achievement.

But this time she couldn’t laugh.

Although she hadn’t seen her own reflection, her face couldn’t be much different from the mages below.

No… perhaps she was even more overwhelmed than them.

From the moment she saw Alon’s magic with her own eyes.

Heinkel was naturally already preparing to decompose other Tier magics and extract information.

Her inquisitive spirit, which for hundreds of years she had only soothed by teaching promising mages to kill boredom, began to spin furiously.

Alon’s magic had been so fascinating that it reignited a greed she had kept dormant while waiting for a new “moment.”

As all those desires mixed together and she watched Alon trembling slightly…

‘I’m going to vomit~!’

Alon frowned, feeling his stomach turn.

At first, he was so surprised by the true power of Light that he hadn’t even noticed, but once he calmed down, he realized he was suffering from magical exhaustion.

«Hum-hum–»

Alon endured the urge to retch with superhuman strength.

If there weren’t people in front of him, he would have vomited already, but he was still a normal human.

He was aware of the atmosphere.

He felt all those gazes pinned on him, holding their breath, and he didn’t want to show a bad image in front of so many people.

So he turned his body naturally and took a few steps toward Penia, who was watching him with a surprised expression.

But just at the moment Alon tried to move—

«Can I ask… just one question?»

A mage in green robes, who had been sitting in silence, stood up slowly.

Alon, swallowing the dizziness as best he could, looked at him.

The mage, nervous under that gaze, moved his Adam’s apple and said:

«…The magic you showed… what the hell was it?»

The question everyone in the room wanted to ask.

But that no one had dared to pronounce easily.

The gazes pinned themselves on Alon again.

He endured the pressure and thought about how to answer.

«Light.»

He answered the truth.

«…Are you really saying… that was Light?»

The mage asked him with a trembling voice.

Alon hesitated whether to explain more, but with the nausea rising, it was hard to endure.

He nodded—

And left the hall without saying more.

Right after Alon left—

«Was that really Light?»

«Impossible—»

«But we saw it, didn’t we? We all saw that faint glow.»

«Of course we did. No one here would be such an idiot as to not even recognize that.»

«Then… what the Marquis showed… what the hell was it?»

The heavy silence broke as if it had been a mirage.

As soon as the person involved left, the mages began to speak immediately, and the hall became agitated.

«So what the Marquis showed… was it perhaps… the next phase of Light…?»

A phrase spoken by one of the mages provoked—

«Does such a thing exist?»

«That’s absurd!»

«But if it’s not that, there’s no way to explain what the Marquis did. That wasn’t Origin.»

«……Exactly. What the Marquis showed was undoubtedly Light.»

The hall, which should have been a place of respect and silence, became noisier than a market.

Exactly one hour later.

The mages who arrived late to start the rest of the demonstrations observed the semi-destroyed hall.

«…The Marquis was incredible but…»

«What about our research…?»

They felt a deep, cold emptiness in their chests.

Later, after recovering using the primordial elven divinity, Alon murmured while feeling the remnants of magical exhaustion still inside him:

«……Now I’m okay…»

He sighed, though only for a moment.

Evan, who was looking at him with a lost expression, called him.

«My Lord.»

«What is it?»

«That… was that really Light?»

«How many times are you going to ask?»

«N-no… it’s just that… I don’t know, it felt so different…»

Evan scratched his head.

Truthfully, Alon agreed internally.

He hadn’t imagined it would have such power either.

«To be honest, yes, I expected it to be different. But… not like this. Isn’t it obvious?»

Alon nodded silently. Beside him, Penia nodded as well.

«Sure… Light is a household magic. But there is something more terrifying.»

«What is it?»

«…You didn’t obtain the Phrase, right?»

Alon nodded slowly.

It was true.

With Heinkel, he had only obtained five Phrases.

He hadn’t obtained the Completion Phrase.

In other words, the magic he showed wasn’t even complete.

«…Don’t tell me that power… wasn’t the final version.»

«Like when you used Absolute Glaciation. You were there, right?»

Penia answered precisely.

Evan remained silent for a moment and then said:

«My Lord, when you are going to use that thing… do it far away from me.»

«Why, all of a sudden?»

«I don’t want to get roasted instantly.»

He spoke firmly, remembering the last time.

Penia added:

«It probably won’t be fixed in that form. It must have other variations.»

«I think so too.»

«…Really, ancient magic becomes more interesting the more one digs. It makes me want to drop everything and study it right now.»

«Same here.»

Alon nodded.

This had been his magical research until now:

Advancing a little at a time, clinging to small clues in a sea of uncertainty.

But now—

Alon finally had what he had sought so much: a lighthouse, a reference point.

One that he and Penia knew very well: Tier magics.

That filled Alon’s head with expectations.

He knew that extracting information from a magic was enormously difficult… but the excitement was enough to drive him.

Therefore—

Should I dedicate more time to finding the Phrase first? No, that is important, but perhaps I should learn from Heinkel how to extract information from Tier magics…

While he burned with motivation—

[Are you feeling well now?]

Heinkel appeared, passing through the wall.

«Yes.»

At Alon’s affirmative response, Heinkel got straight to the point as if she had been waiting for him.

[I want to start researching Tier magics thoroughly. Will you cooperate with me? I know you struggle to extract information from them.]

Alon nodded.

It was true.

[I will help you with that part.]

«Then I—»

[What you must do is simple: just keep showing me magic. Nothing else.]

For a moment, Heinkel seemed to react to something she saw, but she immediately recovered her composure.

«I have no reason to refuse.»

[It’s a deal.]

Both smiled with satisfaction.

A day passed.

Alon learned more methods from Heinkel to extract information from Tier magics and then abandoned the academy.

He wanted to stay a little longer, but he couldn’t leave Ryanga abandoned for too long.

«Hmm… I would have liked to study a few more days. A pity.»

Penia murmured dejectedly. Alon replied:

«Even so, we have learned everything necessary.»

«That’s true. Besides, we left Sparrow there, right? That will help Heinkel advance faster with Tier magics.»

Alon had handed Heinkel the gem containing Sparrow in case it could be useful to her.

«So, if Heinkel studies Tier 1, we should study Magic Bolt, right?»

«Before that, we must find the Phrase.»

«Obviously, that goes first.»

While they discussed plans—

«Ah, My Lord. I have something to report.»

«Information?»

Evan arrived with a report.

«Yes, about the anomaly that was discovered in Ashtalon. They are sending strong people to stop it.»

«Strong people?»

«Yes, about three people.»

«Is Historia participating too?»

«No, not that I know of. I heard it was someone from the north, a Dragon King, and a Hermit. Those three.»

«Ah, and there is also news about our Divine Land.»

«I see. What’s wrong?»

Evan cleared his throat.

«Well… that the number of people in the Divine Land increased.»

«Increased…?»

«Yes.»

«…Didn’t you say it would decrease?»

«We don’t know the exact reason. But people keep entering the Divine Land.»

«Why?»

«I don’t know. Maybe… there are more entering than leaving.»

«But quite some time has passed.»

«It’s true, but… ah, why don’t you check the divinity?»

Alon immediately understood Evan’s intention and closed his eyes.

And then—

He opened them.

«Did you see it?»

Evan asked immediately.

But Alon didn’t answer yet. He closed his eyes again.

«Seven?»

Evan tilted his head.

But when Alon opened his eyes again—

He did so with disbelief.

And he closed his eyes again.

There he saw—

‘…What is this?’

A planet in the Divine Land absurdly colossal, beyond all sense.

Confused—

He understood only one thing instinctively:

‘What is happening? What the hell is happening……?’

In his small and adorable Divine Land… something had occurred that completely escaped his control.
