Chapter 308. Laksas (4)

“A… Sin egg?”

“Don’t tell me you brought it without knowing what it was?”

“……That is a Sin egg?”

“Yes. At first I thought maybe I was mistaken, but no… it seems correct.”

Alon couldn’t understand anything.

He looked at the Observer who was contemplating the black orb, also known as a magatama.

“Are Sins… things that are born?”

What he knew was that Sins were not born. They simply existed from before.

The Observer, who continued staring fixedly at the orb, replied:

“No, just as you know, Sins are entities that already exist. Even if you were to eliminate everything that manages to ascend, you could never destroy them completely.”

“They were created that way,” added the male Observer.

“When we met for the first time, couldn’t you tell me anything about those black things?”

“It was like that, but now that those beings have already emerged… it no longer makes any sense to hide it.”

“……Did you know the Sins had ascended?”

“Yes. At least it is impossible to ignore that while being in this place.”

With a somewhat darkened expression, she murmured anyway, and returned to the topic.

“Anyway, this is undoubtedly a Sin egg. Or rather… it would be more correct to call it a Sin egg that has been created, but has not yet born.”

“……Created, but not born?”

“Literally. It was created as a Sin egg, but it hasn’t been born yet and still maintains the form of an egg.”

“You know a lot.”

“My predecessor told me. And analyzing the magic it gives off… there is no doubt.”

Alon remained silent for a moment and asked:

“Do you know anything else about that orb?”

“Do you wish to know more about this orb?”

“No, it’s not exactly for that.”

Alon explained to the Observer the reason he had gone there. After listening to him, the Observer summarized:

“Then, if I understand correctly: someone whom even you are not able to perceive clearly told you that if you brought this orb with me, you could find a way to converse with him.”

“That’s right.”

Alon nodded.

After thinking about it for a few seconds, the Observer said:

“First of all, I don’t know who that person is. And I also don’t know the method to use this orb and speak with him.”

“I see.”

“But I can take you to someone who might know how to speak with that being whom you cannot even perceive.”

Then she returned the orb to him.

“Behind here is a door. Follow it inside. There you will be able to converse with whom you must.”

She pointed to the back.

Alon prepared to move forward together with Radan when—

“And… could you converse with me for a moment?”

The Observer looked at Radan.

“…With me?”

“Yes.”

Radan shifted his gaze toward Alon.

When Alon gave him a slight signal with his head, Radan accepted:

“Alright.”

Alon followed the directions and walked behind the enormous pillar.

When the voices of Radan and the Observer began to fade into the distance—

He found a door.

It was a wooden door, visible and out of place in that cavernous environment. Alon observed it for a few seconds and then entered.

After doing so, a hallway appeared that led somewhere. He advanced through it for a few minutes until reaching a room at the end.

Inside, there was an altar, as if used for sacred offerings.

Alon observed it in silence.

‘…Does this look familiar to me?’

Without realizing it, he brought his hand to his chin.

He felt like he had seen a similar altar somewhere.

But before he could think further—

Voooom—!

The black orb, which hadn’t emitted any signal until then, began to tremble violently. Alon looked at it and, by instinct, directed his gaze toward the altar.

And—

Clack.

When he placed the orb in the center of the altar—

—Ssssshhhh.

A black energy began to spread.

“……!”

Alon’s eyes opened slightly without him being able to help it.

The energy covering the room was… almost identical to that of the Sins.

Just as he prepared to form a hand seal—

[It is not necessary.]

A voice resonated.

A female voice, soft and calm.

Alon looked up and saw that, although there was nothing there before—

[No Sin will appear here.]

—a human figure had emerged.

No, to be precise… it was a spirit in human form.

She was right in front of Alon, but her form was tremendously diffuse.

“Who are you?”

Alon asked without hesitation.

[I have my own name, but I doubt you came only for that.]

The figure spoke to herself and then, toward Alon:

[I am the ancient Observer.]

She answered thus.

“…Does the Observer have a connection to the Sins?”

After a brief silence, Alon asked.

He understood the situation to a certain point.

But he didn’t comprehend why, upon offering the so-called Sin egg, the ancient Observer had appeared.

[No, we are not related.]

“Then, why do you have that energy similar to that of the Sins……?”

[Simple. I am borrowing the power of the orb to manifest.]

She raised her hand toward the orb.

Alon looked and saw that the black energy was being absorbed into the altar.

“Can’t you manifest without the power of the orb?”

[Not exactly. But without the amount of power a Sin egg possesses, I cannot manifest in this form.]

She added calmly that the altar simply absorbed an abnormal amount of power, not that she was a grandiose entity.

[Well then, why were you looking for me?]

She asked.

“In the East—”

Alon recounted what had happened: how he had obtained the orb in the East, how he had reached the Observer, and finally, up to that chamber.

The ancient Observer listened to everything without interrupting.

[I see. Then I understand why he sent you.]

She nodded, as if everything fit together.

“Do you know that being?”

[Yes. But I cannot say his name.]

“Why?”

[For your own good.]

“……Is he a being whose name is dangerous even to hear?”

[Yes. Even if I told you, you wouldn’t be able to hear it.]

“And is there a way to speak with him?”

[Yes, there is. But finding the necessary items will be somewhat complicated.]

“Which ones?”

After gathering her thoughts, the ancient Observer spoke:

[The Mask of the One Who Walks Forward, the Blessing of the One Who Howls, and the Gem of The One with Closed Eyes. You need those three.]

“If I gather the three items, will I be able to speak with him?”

[Correct.]

Except for one, Alon knew all the artifacts mentioned.

‘The only unknown one is the Gem of The One with Closed Eyes.’

He thought for a moment, then set it aside.

Anyway…

It meant he couldn’t speak with that being right there.

So he said:

“Can I ask you something else?”

[About what?]

“Do you know anything about the * Star Eater *?”

Alon asked.

The ancient Observer shook her head:

[No, I know nothing about that.]

“I see.”

[If it were a title from the past, I would know. But there is no record of a ‘Star Eater‘.]

“I understand…”

Alon murmured and asked the next thing:

“Then, can you tell me something about that being? There are things I simply don’t understand.”

[If it is about him—]

“Yes. There are parts I don’t comprehend.”

[And what are they?]

“…Well, to be honest, there are many things. But—”

[Could you tell me everything you conversed about with him?]

Alon reconstructed the conversation calmly. In reality, it wasn’t difficult: they practically only spoke of Rebellion and the Sins.

Once he finished telling it—

The ancient Observer remained silent, thoughtful.

After a while—

[I believe I can explain that conversation to you.]

“That truly is good news.”

[First, about Rebellion. I don’t know what he meant by ‘became the Star Eater‘, but Rebellion means True Mages.]

“…Why would he call the Mages Rebellion?”

[Because—]

The ancient Observer explained:

[Just as ‘The One with Closed Eyes‘ cursed the elves, he completely eliminated the True Mages from the world.]

“…What?”

He said that.

Just when Alon was beginning to speak seriously with her—

“Is the work going well?”

“Yes, Lord Kurak is diligently gathering the promised materials at the Gate.”

“I am glad to hear it.”

King Stallian V was listening to an informant’s report while traveling toward Tern for a meeting.

“Anything else relevant?”

“About Kurak, no. But there is another matter to report.”

“Which one?”

“Do you remember that Marquis Palatio said he would form an order of knights?”

Stallian V nodded.

“Yes, I remember. I suppose he already selected his members.”

“That is so. But… the amount is—”

“How many?”

“50 knights and 600 soldiers.”

“…That is quite a lot.”

Stallian V nodded again.

But he didn’t react too much.

‘Well, it is possible.’

For a marquis like Palatio, it wasn’t strange to handle a force like that.

“And furthermore, he is training those knights and soldiers extremely hard, in a new territory.”

“I see.”

Stallian V kept nodding. It could be intensive training. And if he received new lands, it also made sense.

But then—

“And lastly.”

“……There’s still more?”

“Yes. According to reports, the followers of Kalanon are moving toward the territory where Palatio is gathering his soldiers.”

Stallian V’s expression changed.

“…The followers of Kalanon are mostly mages and knights, right?”

“Correct.”

“…And are they all moving there?”

“Yes.”

“How many are they?”

“We couldn’t get an exact number, but… there are many.”

Stallian V frowned.

‘What is this…?’

50 knights and 600 soldiers.

Perfectly possible.

Brutal training in new lands.

Strange, but understandable.

But now… religious mages and knights moving en masse toward the same place…?

And toward new lands?

Stallian V’s pupils trembled.

A fleeting thought crossed his mind—

Could it be… that… is happening?

But he immediately discarded the idea.

There was no way Marquis Palatio would choose that path.

It would be…

Stallian V remembered something.

The image in his memory: that man… activating weapons of mass destruction just because a prince spoke more than he should have.

Acting as if politics didn’t matter at all.

For an instant, a phrase surfaced in his mind:

—Would it really be… disadvantageous?

Worry began to reflect on his face.
